Rodney Sanders earns USMTS triumph at Creek County

A three-day slate of Summit USMTS competition kicked off with Rodney Sanders in victory lane at Creek County Speedway on Thursday evening.

With a $3,000 top prize up for grabs in the Sooner Showdown at the quarter-mile track in Kellyville, Oklahoma, 34 Modified competitors filled the Creek County pit area. Sanders started strong by turning in the second-quickest time in his qualifying group and winning his heat race from the pole.

He started third in the 40-lap A-Main, taking the lead for the first time on the 13th circuit. He showed the way for the remainder of the race and crossed the start-finish line 1.553 seconds ahead of runner-up Terry Phillips. Jim Chisholm, Tanner Mullens and Gary Christian completed the top five.

Sanders’ victory was his sixth of the season in USMTS competition and the 158th of his career. It was also his 11th feature triumph overall in 2025.

For the next two nights, the USMTS calendar shifted to Wheatland, Missouri’s Lucas Oil Speedway for the 16th annual Slick Mist Show-Me Shootout. Thirty-three USMTS entries were at the 3/8-mile track on Friday, and 34 Modified teams competed on Saturday.

After missing a transfer spot in his heat on Friday evening, Sanders took third in his B-Main to start 17th in the $5,000-to-win feature. He moved forward through the 40-lapper to finish in 10th place.

On Saturday, Sanders was again unable to transfer via his heat race and was eighth in his B-Main. As a result, he needed a provisional to begin the 50-lap, $5,000-to-win A-Main from 23rd on the grid. He charged ahead an impressive 20 positions to score a podium result, finishing behind Kyle Strickler and Jim Chisholm. Mullens and Tyler Wolff rounded out the top five. For his efforts, Sanders was awarded the Swift Springs Move of the Race.

Thanks to his three top-10 finishes during the weekend, Sanders remains atop the Summit USMTS National Championship standings.
